51378263ParticipantReturn of the Ancients feels less like a routine Early Access patch and more like a proper shake-up for Path of Exile 2. The May 29 update brings systems that players can actually build around, not just a few bigger numbers on gear. If you’re already sorting stash tabs, checking market habits, or comparing POE 2 Items before the patch lands, Nightfall and Redemption are the two names worth watching first.
Nightfall Turns Blocking Into Movement
Nightfall is the sort of unique shield that makes you rethink what a shield is meant to do. Its special skill, Soaring Midnight, lets you throw the shield, then recast to blink to it and smash the ground. If you don’t recast, it comes back by itself. That sounds simple, but the trick is in the reset. Catching the shield, breaking Frost Wall crystals, and certain return effects can refresh the slam cooldown, so the whole thing starts to feel like a rhythm game with explosions and cold damage. Why Players Are Testing Frost Wall
The Frost Wall setup is probably the first version most people will try. You drop the wall, send Nightfall through it, break the crystals, then slam again before enemies have time to settle. It’s messy in the best way. Projectile speed helps the shield travel faster, while melee, slam, projectile, and area scaling all matter at once. That double-tagged scaling is what makes the item so appealing. It won’t be brainless, though. Miss the timing or place the wall badly and the build can feel clunky fast.Redemption Gives Grenades Their Own Identity
Redemption sits on the other side of the patch, aimed straight at Mercenary players who want to turn the screen into a blast zone. It uses the new grenade launcher base, which is a big deal by itself because grenade builds no longer have to borrow space from normal crossbow setups. Its main mechanic, Explosive Fervour, builds up after repeated grenade use. Once it kicks in, cooldowns fall away and attack speed jumps, giving you a short window where you can unload everything. Bosses with downtime could be perfect for this, since you can prepare the burst while waiting for the next damage phase. The Real Problems Won’t Be Damage
Both uniques look powerful, but neither one seems free. Nightfall will likely be tied to Tul and Breach farming, with a high level requirement making it a late-game chase piece. Redemption may come from Trarthan content, pinnacle bosses, or high-tier mapping, though players will need confirmation after launch. The bigger issue for Redemption may be mana, not damage. Spamming grenades during Explosive Fervour sounds great until your resource bar disappears. Anyone planning around U4GM POE 2 Items for sale should still think about sustain, cooldown handling, and backup rares, because the strongest patch builds are rarely the ones that only hit hard. -
